Saturn: The End?
I’ve been thinking a lot in the last couple of weeks about Saturn, and how sad it is that GM, amidst all its tactical blunders, economic situation, and imposed bankruptcy, is talking about dismantling the faltering subsidiary. With the recent fall out of the Penske buyout, the company looks to be on its last leg proverbially.
Looking back, it amazes me a little that we’ve reached this point with a car company that has always shown so much glimmer of promise. In the 80′s and early 90′s these cars were a mainstay of the American mainstream. A little on the conservative side perhaps, but their new use of materials, craftsmanship, and family friendly campaigning brought Saturn to the forefront of its day.
Now, in a time in which green is the battle cry for a whole generation and economical is the standard of choice, its hard to understand how a company that had so much promise has fallen on such hard times. If any car could be billed as a standout in this world of eco-friendlyness, a car made of recycled plastic and a 35 mile per gallon Hybrid engine would probably be my first choice…as it is, GM has made their own bed on this one.
As it is, the commercial I really wanted to use was the one where the sales guys hits the drivers side door with a baseball bat. Ah, memories.

A neat perspective and look back at the Saturn legacy.
